Of all the changes we've encountered in our home town, the most promising by far is the amendment to licensing laws making it easier for intimate, cafe-style bars to operate in a city previously saturated with large scale clubs and swanky bars (think chrome interiors, overpriced cocktails and Rohypnol).
For my debut into Sydney's new nightlife experience, I entrusted myself to long time friend Adrian who's impeccable sense of cool and eye for the new I have relied upon since high school to inform my social life. We were joined by Adrian's friend (and chef) Kate, so I was in good hands.
Down a back ally in Darlinghurst, where we’re told that it’s not unusual to find a few used needles or the odd human faeces, we enter Love Tilly Divine. Despite the twee name, this tiny bar slash tapas style restaurant is super savvy and yet maintains a personal, hands on feel.
Served by the two incredibly friendly young guys who established the bar and built it entirely with their own hands, we are well looked after. The concise food menu is simple and a delicious compliment to the extensive wine menu.
We dine and chat and drink and laugh and enviously watch a young couple slow dance in a tiny crevice between the bar and the entrance.
Long recognized as a foodies paradise for the range and quality of food on offer, it seems atmosphere has caught up in Sydney at last.
Arse! The one night I stay home
